Developing Tourism from an Art Gallery in Canada's Southernmost Town
May - September, 2021
Overview
Throughout the summer of 2021 I worked full time with the very small tourism department of Kingsville, ON. I was responsible for:
-
Marketing public events in Kingsville and the Windsor-Essex Region tourism
-
Creative directing for new events and spring campaigns
-
Improving the UX of Kingsville's' municipal website
-
Technical writing for new Experiential Tourism Packages
-
Weekly graphic design and social media scheduling for summer programs
Taking on Additional Roles
After the first quarter of my position, I became more involved with interpersonal roles, as COVID restrictions were leading to more in-person tourism efforts.
This was a great experience, as I learned to manage my individual projects while contributing to the tourism scene in ways that make people want to come back.
On Saturday afternoons and evenings, I worked with the Kingsville's Tourism Team and Parks and Recreation Department to support one of my favourite local events, Kingsville's weekly "Open Streets."
During Saturday's downtown Open Streets festivities, my roles were split between:
-
Tourism Information Guide
-
Art Gallery attendant
-
Runner who could practically support the flow of events each week
Weekends were fast-paced and exciting with this added responsibility. I absolutely loved getting to greet people, pitch our regional attractions, and even contribute to the sales of a few paintings by local artists
Standout Projects
-
Designing material for Windsor Essex's Bike month in September
-
Creating Experiential Tourism Packages for Kingsville's shoulder season
-
Drafting vision outlines and pitching ideas to local businesses to for Kingsville's first "Holiday Stroll" (will take place in 2022)
